Heidi Woodford of Pike Central High School Named 2026 Lilly Endowment Community Scholar for Pike County

Pike County Community Foundation is pleased to announce the recipient of the 2026 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship for Pike County: Heidi Woodford, Pike Central High School. Lilly Endowment Community Scholars are recognized for their community involvement, academic achievement, character, and leadership.

"The Pike County Community Foundation was extremely impressed with the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship applicants this year. Their educational success, dedication to serving the community, and inspiring future goals give us great confidence that they will make a positive impact on Pike County now and in the future," said Laura Hazelman, Regional Director of Community Engagement and Impact.

Each Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship provides full tuition, required fees, and up to $900 per year for required books and equipment for four years of full-time undergraduate study leading to a baccalaureate degree at any eligible Indiana public or private nonprofit college or university. Scholars also join the Lilly Scholars Network (LSN), which connects them with resources and opportunities to lead on campus and in their communities. Both the scholarship program and LSN are supported by grants from Lilly Endowment to Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI).

"I’m truly so grateful for this scholarship and the ways it has and will continue to impact me. There is truly nothing better than serving your small town and working hard at your own success. I can’t wait to pursue my education at the University of Evansville, majoring in Nursing, with plans to pursue the Doctorate CRNA program. As a Nurse, you must have a servant heart, and I cannot wait to continue serving my community. Romans 8:28 ‘God works for the good of those who love him, and who are called according to his purpose,’" said Heidi Woodford, Lilly Endowment Community Scholar.

In nominating Pike County’s Lilly Endowment Community Scholar, the committee considered class rank, transcripts, financial need, school activities, honors and awards, work history, statement of goals, letters of recommendation, community/volunteer activities, and a finalist interview. After narrowing the field of applicants, nominees were submitted to Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI), the statewide administrator of the program, for final selection.

Since its inception in 1997-1998, Lilly Endowment has supported this program with tuition grants totaling more than $505 million, benefiting over 5,400 Indiana students. The program’s primary purposes are:

To raise the level of educational attainment in Indiana.
To increase awareness of the beneficial roles Indiana community foundations play.
To encourage and support Lilly Scholars’ engagement with Indiana leaders to improve quality of life statewide.

The Pike County Community Foundation announced that more than $122,000 has been awarded to 31 local nonprofits through its Community Good Grants Program. These grants support projects that strengthen the Pike County community and improve the quality of life for local residents.

These scholarships, made possible by generous local donors, provide financial support for students pursuing college, university, technical programs, or other post-secondary education paths.

The 2026 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Application is Now Open in Pike County

The 2026 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship application is now available in Pike County through the Pike County Community Foundation, an affiliate of the Community Foundation Alliance. The Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program (LECSP) will provide 147 scholarships statewide and one scholarship in Pike County.

LECSP scholarships may be used for otherwise unreimbursed full tuition, required fees, and a special allocation of up to $900 per year. The special allocation may cover the costs for required books and required equipment for four years of undergraduate study on a full-time basis, leading to a baccalaureate degree at any eligible Indiana public or private nonprofit college or university.

The program, administered statewide by Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI) and locally in Pike County through the Pike County Community Foundation, an affiliate of the Community Foundation Alliance, is open to all Indiana residents who:

graduate from an accredited Indiana high school by 2026 and receive their diploma no later than June 30, 2026;
intend to pursue a full-time baccalaureate course of study at an eligible college or university in Indiana; and
meet the criteria specific to Pike County Community Foundation. Visit pikecountycf.org/lilly-endowment-community-scholarship-program for complete information regarding the Pike County application criteria.

Students can learn more about the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship in Pike County and apply for this scholarship by visiting the Pike County Community Foundation website. Applications must be completed and submitted by August 25, 2025, to be considered.

Applications will be evaluated on, but not limited to, the following criteria: class rank, grade transcripts, financial need, school activities, honors and awards, work history, statement of goals, letters of recommendation, and community and volunteer activities. Three finalists will be nominated by the Pike County Community Foundation, and their names will be submitted to ICI for final selection of the recipients. Scholarship recipients will be notified in December.

21 Students Awarded More Than $39,000 in Scholarships from the Pike County Community Foundation

The Pike County Community Foundation distributed more than $39,000 to 21 local Pike County students from its Community Scholarship Program. These scholarships are funded by generous donors who have established a scholarship fund with the Pike County Community Foundation.

This year’s scholarship gala to celebrate and recognize these exceptional students was held at First Baptist Church, where fund founders, recipients, and parents got together. In addition to announcing the recipients, the Regional Director of Community Engagement & Impact, Laura Hazelman reflected on how important the community is in stewarding education in Pike County.

“We are deeply grateful to the generous fund founders and donors who make these scholarship awards possible through the Pike County Community Foundation. Their investment in the education of our youth is truly life-changing for each recipient. Opportunities for Entrepreneurs: Comprehensive Report Outlines Strategic Demand, New Market Openings in Southern Indiana Region

A broad spectrum of diverse demand for a wide variety of professionals and professional services exists in southern Indiana, representing an array of actionable growth opportunities and potential market development. These opportunities were recently strategically documented in a comprehensive report funded by the Community Foundation Alliance and the Harrison County Community Foundation.

The planning report, conducted in partnership with the Indiana First READI region, profiles and pinpoints specific growth opportunities for entrepreneurs in several categories, according to Jill Carpenter, President and CEO of the Community Foundation Alliance here.

“Based on direct primary research conducted across multiple counties, the Indiana First Quality of Life Economic Impact Analysis report reveals market potential and entrepreneurial gaps on a county-by-county basis, demonstrating areas of real demand,” said Carpenter. “A careful review of key areas can yield some significant potential market growth for the right companies, professionals, and entrepreneurs.”

The economic development executives in the First Indiana region noted that they intend to mine the report to determine opportunities for scalable market growth and talent attraction. The report offers an analysis of the potential economic impact for addressing and improving defined issues throughout the region.

“This report can be a workbook for professionals looking to expand, relocate, or start up a business in multiple categories,” said Chris Pfaff, CEO of Knox County Indiana Economic Development. “It provides actionable data on what services and capacity presently exist within our counties and region, and what services residents travel outside of the county or region to buy or obtain.”

“Those gaps represent a definable opportunity to be evaluated and captured,” he added. “It can serve as a talent attractor and entrepreneurial opportunity of the first order for our region.”

The information is expected to help the region enhance its state and local investments from the READI program and other private investment opportunities.

“In order to get feedback from each county, key stakeholders were invited to participate in community conversations regarding essential services in their county in addition to a public survey facilitated by consultants,” said Julie Moorman, President and CEO of the Harrison County Community Foundation. “We are appreciative of the input from community stakeholders in helping identify gaps in essential services and sharing their input of quality-of-life amenities in their communities.”

The 191-page report, assembled by TPMA (Thomas P. Miller and Associates), includes significant data analysis and identified specific opportunities to enhance the quality of life in five southern Indiana counties, sketching out gaps that can be filled through initiative planning and growth, infrastructure investments, and elevation of talent opportunities.

Actionable potential engagement highlights for growth range from healthcare and essential services to entertainment and dining, as well as professional and technical services.

"The report confirms what we’ve heard anecdotally for years—many Perry County residents travel outside the county for veterinary services," said Erin Emerson, President and CEO of the Perry County Development Corporation. "Now, by pairing local insight with concrete data, we can make an even stronger case that additional veterinary services could thrive here - this is just one of many opportunities highlighted in the analysis that align with the needs of our community."

$5 Million Grant to Fund the Buffalo Trace Trail Project, Connecting Pike County Residents to History and Wellness

Community Foundation Alliance, in conjunction with Pike County Community Foundation, has received a grant of $5 million from Lilly Endowment Inc. through the competitive Community Leadership Implementation Grants component of the eighth phase of its Giving Indiana Funds for Tomorrow (GIFT VIII) initiative. This is one of 30 implementation grants awarded through GIFT VIII, a statewide Lilly Endowment initiative designed to support the efforts of community foundations and their partners to strengthen the quality of life for the people in the towns, cities, counties, and regions they serve.

With the grant, Pike County Community Foundation, an affiliate foundation of the Community Foundation Alliance, Inc. will collaborate with the City of Petersburg, Pike County Commissioners, and Pike County Progress Partners, Inc. on the Buffalo Trace Trail project. The Buffalo Trace Trail project presents an opportunity to create a vibrant gateway and connect residents with the rich history of Pike County. This 2.5-mile trail connects to the 5-mile fitness path in Petersburg, extending safe walking paths and community accessibility.

The project will also include public art welcoming the community and highlighting cultural and recreational features along the path. Indiana University’s Center for Rural Engagement will lead the development of public art installations, incorporating community input to create meaningful and culturally resonant pieces.

Jill Carpenter, President and CEO of the Community Foundation Alliance, said, “Ultimately, the Buffalo Trace Trail project is a vital step in creating a more thriving, connected, and attractive community in Petersburg and Pike County, contributing to the area's growth and positioning it as a desirable place to live for current and future residents.”

The project’s timeline spans three years, with trail construction, public art development, and blight removal occurring at the same time. This initiative aims to reshape the community through collaboration, community engagement, and thoughtful development.

The art installations along the trail will serve as a tribute to the region’s rich history, creating a vibrant atmosphere that fosters pride among residents, workers, and visitors alike. The goal is to build a welcoming, family-friendly environment that promotes health, wellness, and connection.

Blight removal will play a pivotal role in transforming Petersburg, attracting new families to the area who will enjoy the benefits of the Buffalo Trace Trail. As the community grows, both the population and the assessed property values in Petersburg and Pike County are expected to rise. This influx of residents will help revitalize the area, enhancing the community and contributing to the economic vitality of the region.

In 1990, Lilly Endowment launched the Giving Indiana Funds for Tomorrow (GIFT) initiative to help establish and further develop community foundations throughout Indiana. Pike County Community Foundation Announces the 2025 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program Recipient

The Pike County Community Foundation is pleased to announce the recipient of the 2025 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship for Pike County – Tyler DeCoursey, Pike Central High School . Lilly Endowment Community Scholars are known for their community involvement, academic achievement, character, and leadership.

“The Pike County Community Foundation was impressed with the level of applicants from Pike Central High School,” said Laura Hazelman, Regional Director of Community Engagement and Impact. “The students all demonstrated a drive for educational success and will be excellent ambassadors for Pike County in their future endeavors.”

Each Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship provides for full tuition, required fees, and a special allocation of up to $900 per year for required books and required equipment for four years. The scholarship is for full-time undergraduate students leading to a baccalaureate degree at any eligible Indiana public or private nonprofit college or university. Lilly Endowment Community Scholars may also participate in the Lilly Scholars Network (LSN), which connects both current scholars and alumni with resources and opportunities to be active leaders on their campuses and in their communities. Both the scholarship program and LSN are supported by grants from Lilly Endowment to Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI) and Indiana Humanities.

“I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities presented through the Lilly Endowment,” said Tyler DeCoursey, 2025 Lilly Endowment Community Scholar. “Because of this, my educational experience will be tremendously aided.”

In determining Pike County’s Lilly Endowment Community Scholar nominees, consideration was given to class rank, grade transcripts, financial need, school activities, honors and awards, work history, statement of goals, letters of recommendation, community/volunteer activities, and finalist interview, all evaluated by the LECSP Nominating Committee. After the field of applicants was narrowed down, nominees were submitted to ICI, the statewide administrator of the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program, which approves the final selection of scholarship recipients.

Lilly Endowment created the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program for the 1997-98 school year. Since then, grant funding in excess of $490 million has supported more than 5,300 Indiana students who have received scholarships through the program.

The primary purposes of the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program are: 1) to help raise the level of educational attainment in Indiana; 2) to increase awareness of the beneficial roles Indiana community foundations can play in their communities; and 3) to encourage and support the efforts of current and past Lilly Endowment Community Scholars to engage with each other and with Indiana business, governmental, educational, nonprofit and civic leaders to improve the quality of life in Indiana generally and in local communities throughout the state.

2024 Community Scholarship Applications Open

Many of our donors have chosen to honor their loved ones, communities, high schools, colleges, and professions by establishing scholarship funds through their local Community Foundations in Daviess, Gibson, Knox, Perry, Pike, Posey, Spencer, Vanderburgh, and Warrick Counties. These funds support the annual Community Scholarship programs, providing valuable opportunities for students in Southwest Indiana. Thanks to their contributions, applications are being accepted now, with a deadline of Monday, January 20, 2025, at 11:59 p.m.

"We are excited to once again provide scholarship opportunities to students in our Southwest Indiana region,” says Melinda Waldroup, Chief Program Officer at the Community Foundation Alliance. “By offering these scholarships, we are not only investing in individual students but also in the future of our communities. We encourage all eligible students to apply and take a step towards achieving their educational and career goals."

Students may apply for one or more scholarships if they meet the eligibility requirements and selection criteria established by donors. Details about each scholarship and the application are posted on the website at communityfoundationalliance.org/scholarships .

Each scholarship is unique and supports students with a variety of backgrounds, educational goals, and economic statuses. Awards are made without regard to race, creed, color, sex, religion, or national origin and are based on a competitive process that may consider academic achievement, extracurricular activities, personal aspirations, educational goals, and financial need.

The deadline to apply is Monday, January 20, 2025, at 11:59 p.m.

Pike County Community Foundation Now Accepting Applications For The 2025 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program

The 2025 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship application is now available in Pike County through the Pike County Community Foundation. The Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program (LECSP) will provide 147 scholarships statewide and one scholarship in Pike County. LECSP scholarships may be used for otherwise unreimbursed full tuition, required fees, and a special allocation of up to $900 per year. The special allocation may cover the costs for required books and required equipment for four years of undergraduate study on a full-time basis leading to a baccalaureate degree at any eligible Indiana public or private nonprofit college or university.

The program, administered statewide by Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI) and locally in Pike County through the Pike County Community Foundation, is open to all Indiana residents who:

graduate from an accredited Indiana high school by 2025 and receive their diploma no later than June 30, 2025;
intend to pursue a full-time baccalaureate course of study at an eligible college or university in Indiana; and

Applications will be evaluated on, but not limited to, the following criteria: Class Rank, Grade Transcripts, and Financial Need. Three finalists will be nominated by the Pike County Community Foundation, and their names will be submitted to ICI for final selection of the recipients. Scholarship recipients will be notified in December.

Lilly Endowment created LECSP for the 1997-98 school year and has supported the program every year since with tuition grants totaling more than $490 million. More than 5,300 Indiana students have received Lilly Endowment Community Scholarships since the program’s inception.

Pike County Community Foundation Partners With The Pike County Public Library To Bring Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library To Pike County

The Pike County Community Foundation has granted $1,110 to the Pike County Public Library to assist with the cost of bringing Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library to Pike County children. Any Pike County child from birth to age five can enroll to receive a free book every month, which will be delivered to their home.

“The Pike County Community Foundation is excited to partner with the Public Library to bring the Imagination Library to Pike County,” says Laura Hazelman, Regional Director of Community Engagement and Impact. “Studies have shown the importance of reading to young children, and now we are able to help provide amazing books for families to share and read together.”

Pike County residents are able to register their children by visiting the Pike County Public Library.

Pike County Community Foundation Awards Over $85,000 In Scholarships To 22 Area Students

The Pike County Community Foundation announces the distribution of community scholarships totaling $85,400 including renewable scholarships. This year, funds established by generous donors provided scholarships to 22 area students. The Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship recipient and Community Scholarship recipients were recognized at the Pike County Community Foundation Spring Gala on Saturday, April 24, 2024.

In addition to announcing the recipients, the Regional Director of Community Engagement & Impact, Laura Hazelman states, “The Pike County Community Foundation is fortunate to have generous fund founders and donors who have made these scholarships possible. They are truly making an impact on young adults in Pike County. The students at Pike Central High School are blessed to have such a wonderful group of people who are invested in their education and future success. We are thankful to the scholarship committee for their dedication and hard work in selecting our scholarship recipients.”

Carroll-Wyatt Scholarship is an annual, renewable scholarship established by the Carroll-Wyatt Scholarship Fund trust created through the Last Will and Testament of Hilda D. Carroll to provide scholarships to Pike Central High School graduates pursuing a college degree. This year’s recipient, Lexie Onyett, was awarded $1,500.

Claud W. and Lois Kemp Family Scholarship is an annual, renewable scholarship fund established by Jerry D. Kemp to remember his grandparents, Claud W. and Lois (Corn) Kemp. Mr. And Mrs. Kemp were lifelong residents of Pike County. Claud Kemp was a long-time teacher and principal at Velpen School in Velpen, IN. This scholarship is dedicated to Mr. Kemp and his enthusiasm for education. This year’s award of $1,000 goes to Chase Ridao.

Darwin and Grace Youngs Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by Darwin Youngs for graduating seniors of Pike Central High School. This year’s recipient, Cobey McKinney, was awarded $1,000.

Dessie Mae (Bruce) Griffith Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by Allison Bell, Jodie Dawn Huntsman, and Christina Scales in memory of their mother to benefit graduating seniors of Pike Central High School. Dessie Mae was born the youngest of ten children in September 1945 and she passed away after losing her battle with lung cancer in March 2001. This year’s recipient, Jamie Sallee, was awarded $500.

Dr. and Mrs. William A. Weather and Betty B. Wyatt Memorial Scholarship is an annual, renewable scholarship created by Pike Central High School in memory of its former teacher, counselor, and principal, Dr. William A. Weathers, his wife, and their friend Mrs. Betty B. Wyatt. Dr. Weathers spent his entire 42-year career in education in Petersburg and was active in civic and community affairs. Betty Wyatt was a teacher for more than 40 years. This year’s award is $1,000 and the recipient is Jaidyn Gogel.

Gaskins Family Scholarship is an annual, renewable scholarship created by Jim and Cindy Gaskins for Pike Central High School students. This year’s $2,500 award recipient is Gabriella Collins.

Harrell and LaVern Shoultz Scholarship is an annual, renewable scholarship created by Harrell and LaVern Shoultz for graduating seniors at Pike Central High School. This year’s recipient, Ella Adams, was awarded $1,000.

Joe and Libbie Dedman Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by Joe and Libbie Dedman to provide scholarship assistance to Pike Central High School students seeking post-secondary education. Preference for this scholarship will be given to cancer survivors or students with learning challenges. This year $1,000 was awarded to Hannah Fort.

Kenny Veale Memorial Scholarship is an annual scholarship established by Carolyn Veale for graduating Pike Central High School students who are pursuing a career in the automotive field. This year’s recipient, Brailey Mills, was awarded $1,500.

Lawrell Hilgeman Memorial Scholarship/Pike Optimists of Petersburg, Indiana is an annual scholarship created by the Pike Optimists in memory of their esteemed member, Lawrell Hilgeman. This year’s recipient, Arrik McDonald, was awarded $700.

Mary R. Curtis Scholarship is an annual, renewable scholarship established by the estate of Sammy K. Curtis, in memory of his aunt, Miss Mary F. Curtis, a beloved 2nd-grade teacher at Winslow Elementary School. This year’s recipient, Taylor Gosciniak, was awarded $3,500.

Montes/Fenol Scholarship is an annual, renewable scholarship created by Honesto Fenol and his wife, Rosabella Montes Fenol, to help students who might not otherwise qualify for academic scholarships and to encourage them to pursue their education and career goals. This year’s award is $1,500, and the recipient is Brylee Walker.

Otwell School Alumni Association Scholarship is an annual, renewable scholarship created by the Otwell School Alumni Association for students who have a familial or relational connection to the Otwell community. This year’s recipient, Addy Russell, received $1,500.

Petersburg First United Methodist Church Memorial Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by Petersburg First United Methodist Church through a generous donation made in memory of Dessie McDade Burton. The recipient must be a member of the First United Methodist Church. This year’s recipient, Gabriella Collins, was awarded $1,500.

Petersburg High School Alumni Association Scholarship is an annual, renewable scholarship established by the Petersburg High School Alumni Association to create a legacy for Petersburg High School by providing scholarships in the name of the school to Pike Central High School students now and in the future. This year’s award is $1,000, and the recipient is Ashlynn Kirk.

Petersburg High School Class of 1959 Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by the Petersburg High School Class of 1959. This year’s $1,500 award recipient is Macey Stilwell.

Pike Central High School Alumni Association Scholarship is an annual, renewable scholarship created by the Pike Central High School Alumni Association. This year’s recipient, Dylan Charles, received $1,000.

Pike County Chamber of Commerce Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by the Pike County Chamber of Commerce for graduating seniors of Pike Central High School who are planning to attend an Indiana college or university. This year’s recipient, Austin Henson, received $500.

Roger Knight Family Scholarship is an annual scholarship established by Doris Knight to honor and remember Roger Knight, a retired Pike Central High School teacher of agriculture and horticulture. The scholarship has been created to assist students pursuing post-secondary education, with a preference towards students pursuing an agricultural-related field of study – from mechanics to selling farm futures – and members of FFA or 4-H. This year’s recipient, Danessa Pride, received $1,000.

Schafer Pike County Community Foundation Scholarship is an annual, renewable scholarship created by Karl and Elizabeth Schafer for graduating seniors of Pike Central High School who are residents of Pike County. This year’s recipient, Jamie Sallee, was awarded $3,000.

Si and Mary Ashley Family Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by Si and Mary Ashley to provide financial assistance to Pike Central High School graduates. This year’s recipient Maxwell Burkhart will receive $1,000.

Vinson Family Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by John and Mary Ellen Vinson for graduating seniors of Pike Central High School. This year’s $1,800 award recipient is Pillar Rudolph.

Winslow Eagles Memorial Scholarship is an annual, renewable scholarship created by Winslow Eagles Aerie #2646 for graduating seniors of Pike Central High School who have a connection to Winslow Eagles Aerie #2646. This year’s recipient, Jonas Martinez, was awarded $1,200.

Winslow High School Alumni Association Scholarship is an annual, renewable scholarship created by the Winslow High School Alumni Association for graduating seniors of Pike Central High School. This year’s award is $2,000, and the recipient is Karley Kavanaugh.

Ruby Salee of Pike Central High School is the 2024 Pike County Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship recipient. She will receive a full tuition scholarship to the Indiana college of her choice and a $900 yearly stipend for required books and equipment. The Community Foundation handles the applications, and a volunteer selection committee of community leaders completes the review process for this award, submitting final nominations to Independent Colleges of Indiana.

Petersburg Little League and Petersburg Elementary each recently received a $1,000 grant from the Pike County Community Foundation through the Pike Gives Grant Program.

The Pike Gives Grant Program allows Pike County Community Foundation advisory board members to recommend $1,000 grants to local nonprofit organizations. The Foundation’s most recent grant recommendations were made by Wil Teague to assist students at Petersburg Elementary School to purchase books at the Book Fair, and Kelley Hook for general support of Petersburg Little League.

Pike County Community Foundation Awards $170,789 In Grants To Celebrate 25th Anniversary

The Pike County Community Foundation awarded $170,789 in grants to seven local 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations to celebrate its 25 ^th Anniversary of serving Pike County through impactful grantmaking. These grants funded “quality of place” projects that are essential to improving Pike County residents’ lives, driving economic development, and attracting visitors.

Over the past 25 years, the Pike County Community Foundation has been able to grow our assets to over $5.8 million in endowments and non-permanent funds and has granted out over $1.9 million since inception. “What an impact we have made, are making, and will continue to make,” Laura Hazelman, Regional Director of Community Engagement and Impact.

The nonprofit organizations awarded grants have projects that will improve or enhance the physical environment and other characteristics of the community that will make the county an attractive place to live, work, and play. The 25 ^th Anniversary grant recipients are:

· $25,000 to Winslow Parks and Recreation to assist with the cost of turning the old tennis courts into a pickleball court;

· $25,000 to Charger Soccer Club to assist with the cost of creating a boys and girls middle school soccer complex in Winslow;

· $25,000 to Pike County Progress Partners, Inc. to assist with the cost of demolishing and cleaning up the site of the donated blight house in preparation for building safe housing with new sidewalks on 7 ^th Street in Petersburg;

· $23,340 to Pike County School Corporation to purchase a Creator Space at Winslow Elementary where students can come together to learn, create, and innovate;

· $25,000 to The ARC Southwest Indiana to assist with the programming cost to provide vocational training to individuals with intellectual disabilities to prepare them for competitive employment;

· $25,000 to 4-H Council of Pike County, Indiana to assist with the cost of remodeling the restrooms in the Pike County 4-H building to make them more substantial, more user-friendly, safer, and ADA-compliant; and

· $22,449 to Pike County Public Library to purchase a music garden including flower & butterfly bells, lily pad cymbals, mushroom gongs, and a tenor tree to add harmony to the library's outdoor play space.

Pike County Community Foundation Announce the 2024 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Recipient

The Pike County Community Foundation is pleased to announce the recipient of the 2024 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship for Pike County – Ruby Madison Sallee from Pike Central High School. Lilly Endowment Community Scholars are known for their community involvement, academic achievement, character, and leadership.

“Ruby’s dedication to her school and community was apparent in her application and interview. The nominating committee was honored to have the opportunity to meet Ruby and recommend her for this life-changing scholarship opportunity,” said Laura Hazelman, Regional Director of Community Engagement and Impact for the Pike County Community Foundation.

Ruby is the daughter of James and Angie Sallee of Petersburg. Following graduation, she plans to major in Pre-Law. Ruby is a member of the National Honor Society, and Key Club. She is active in track, basketball, swimming, and diving, which have earned her several varsity letters. Ruby is also active in the community, volunteering for the Children Carnival, Operation Christmas Child, Threshermans Steam Engine Show, and her church.

In determining Pike County’s Lilly Endowment Community Scholar nominee, consideration was given to class rank, grade transcripts, financial need, school activities, honors and awards, work history, statement of goals, letter of recommendation, community/volunteer activities, and interview by the LECSP Nominating Committee. After the field of applicants was narrowed down, nominees were submitted to ICI, the statewide administrator of the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program, which approves the final selection of scholarship recipients.

“The Community Foundation was thoroughly impressed with the quality of applicants and their level of involvement, Pike County has many outstanding young adults full of talent and drive,” said Hazelman.

Lilly Scholarship alternates were also announced. Taylor Gosciniak was named the first alternate, and Jamie Sallee was named the second alternate.

Lilly Endowment created the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program for the 1998-99 school year and has supported the program every year since with grants totaling in excess of $505 million. More than 5,200 Indiana students have received the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship since the program’s inception.

Pike County Community Foundation Community Scholarship Program Now Accepting Applications

The Pike County Community Foundation is now accepting applications for available scholarships through the Community Scholarship Program. The deadline to apply is 12:00 noon on Friday, January 19, 2024.

“Donors have honored their loved ones, high schools, or professions by creating endowment funds through the Pike County Community Foundation,” says Laura Hazelman, Regional Director of Community Engagement and Impact. “Individuals, families, and organizations have created community scholarship funds that provide scholarships to assist local students in pursuit of advanced education. Together, these scholarships make up our Community Scholarship Program.”

Students may apply for one or more scholarships, as long as they meet the particular eligibility requirements. Details about each scholarship and the application are posted at www.pikecountycf.org/community-scholarship-program.

Eligibility requirements and selection criteria are determined by donors and are posted on the website. Each scholarship is unique and supports students with a variety of backgrounds, educational goals, and economic statuses. Awards are made without regard to race, creed, color, sex, religion, or national origin and are based on a competitive process that may consider academic achievement, extracurricular activities, personal aspirations, educational goals, and financial need.

Applications are accepted until 12:00 noon on Friday, January 19, 2024.

Pike County Community Foundation Awards More Than $156,000 To 29 Nonprofit Partners

The Pike County Community Foundation celebrated this year’s Community Good Grants recipients on November 2 at the Main Street Presbyterian Church. Grants totaling $156,078 were awarded to 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations as one-time support of a project or for expansions or outgrowths of an initial project. Community Good Grants are made possible by Community Good/Unrestricted Funds and Field of Interest Funds which support a wide variety of needs in Pike County.

This year’s grant recipients are:

· Bread of Life Ministry Inc. to assist with the cost of bringing two semi-loads of donated food products to Pike County to be distributed among the food pantries and partner agencies;

· Buffalo Trace Council-Boy Scouts of America to assist with the cost of memberships and uniforms for Pike County students;

· Charger Soccer Club to purchase four aluminum team player benches and four pop-up canopies;

· Department of Natural Resources to purchase one aircraft (with thermal camera), a hard case for storage, extra propellers, and batteries;

· Dubois-Pike-Warrick Economic Opportunity Committee, Inc., d/b/a TRI-CAP to assist with the purchase of a used van that will meet the needs of the program;

· Holly’s House to provide support for the direct costs of program materials for the prevention program in Pike County Elementary Schools;

· Jefferson Township Volunteer Fire Department to purchase two new handheld 800 mhz radios;

· Otwell Miller Academy to purchase the BonVie 12 x 10 x 10 Polycarbonate Greenhouse that has two sliding doors and four window vents for the Learn to Grow project;

· Petersburg Elementary PTO to purchase shredded rubber mulch from Lowes and adhesive lacquer from Amazon for the Kindergarten Playground at Petersburg Elementary School.

· Petersburg Fire Department to assist with the purchase of an extrication tool, batteries, charger, and mounting brackets;

· Petersburg Police Department to purchase new tasers for all officers employed by Petersburg Police Department;

· Pike Central Chargers Band Boosters to purchase new speaker equipment for marching band competitions and winter percussion competitions;

· Pike County Emergency Medical Services to purchase two VP5430 800Mhz handheld radios;

· Pike County Football Boosters for the purchase of shoulder pads for the football program;

· Pike County Progress Partners, Inc. to assist with the cost of engineering plans for the Buffalo Trace Trail's new 2.6-mile trail;

· Pike County Progress Partners, Inc. to purchase the Lemonade Day Youth Entrepreneurial City program fee;

· Pike County School Corporation to assist with the purchase of a new silver-plated Eastman EPH495 Series BBb Sousaphone;

· Pike County School Corporation to assist with the purchase of a Thermoplastic playground surface that is non-slip and entirely chemical-free creating a safe and inclusive area for kids that is colorful, bright, and vibrant;

· Pike County School Corporation to assist with the purchase of garden equipment, seeds, lumber to build raised beds, soil and manure, and other gardening materials;

· Pike County School Corporation to purchase a GoPro Hero 11 waterproof action camera with extra batteries and accessories for the Pike Central Broadcasting class;

· Pike County School Corporation to purchase a Scantech iReal 2E Handheld Color 3D Scanner which includes all necessary software and cables;

· Pike County School Corporation to purchase chairs for the Preschool Room at Winslow Elementary; and

· Pike County School Corporation to purchase twelve Bleeding Control Stations and four mass casualty bags to be stored at each of the Pike County school’s nurse’s office;

· Purdue Extension Pike County for the purchase of three adult and three youth-size picnic tables for the parks;

· The ARC Southwest Indiana to purchase a smart board for hands-on training;

· Tri-State Food Bank to purchase 150 pre-packed family food boxes to be distributed to Pike County families in need;

· TTR Haven Over the Hilltop to purchase wipes, diapers/pull-ups, and two car seats for families in need;

· United Way of Pike County to purchase t-shirts for Day of Caring volunteers;

The Pike County Community Foundation would like to recognize the continued service and commitment of the advisory board. Members continuing their advisory board commitment include Wil Teague (president), Tera Zazzetti (vice president), Kelley Hook (Secretary), Sarah Belmore, Tony Cochren, Jon Craig, Angie Gray, Vance Hays, Stan Keepes, Chaze Patrick, Abigail Vinnedge, Terri Whitehead, Bridget Butcher, DaLynda Hyatt and Carla Willis.

Volunteer members of the advisory board play a vital role in the success of the Community Foundation. They focus on local asset development, learning about the community’s greatest needs and nonprofits that support those needs, and recommending grants and scholarships. "The accomplishment of our mission hinges significantly on the enthusiastic involvement of community members within our advisory board. Their dedicated volunteer efforts represent a continuous and wholehearted commitment of time, all with the goal of ensuring that donations reliably generate a positive influence on the well-being of individuals in Pike County," said advisory board president, Wil Teague.

While the Pike County Community Foundation is an affiliate of the Community Foundation Alliance, at least one county advisory board member serves as a county representative on the Alliance Board. This fiscal year's representatives are Sarah Belmore and Jon Craig.

Pike County Community Foundation Now Accepting Applications for the 2024 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program

The 2024 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship (LECSP) application is now available in Pike County through the Pike County Community Foundation. The LECSP will provide 147 scholarships statewide and one scholarship in Pike County LECSP scholarships may be used for otherwise unreimbursed full tuition, required fees, and a special allocation of up to $900 per year. The special allocation may cover the costs for required books and required equipment for four years of undergraduate study on a full-time basis leading to a baccalaureate degree at any eligible Indiana public or private nonprofit college or university.

The program, administered statewide by Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI) and locally in Pike County through the Pike County Community Foundation, is open to all Indiana residents who:

• graduate from an accredited Indiana high school by 2024 and receive their diploma no later than June 30, 2024;

• intend to pursue a full-time baccalaureate course of study at an eligible college or university in Indiana; and

• meet the criteria specific to their local Community Foundation.

Students can learn more about the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship in Pike County and apply for this scholarship by visiting https://www.pikecountycf.org/lilly-endowment-community-scholarship-program . Applications must be completed and submitted by Friday, August 25, 2023, at 12 noon EST to be considered.

Applications will be evaluated on, but not limited to, the following criteria: Class Rank, Grade Transcripts, and Financial Need. One recipient and two alternates will be nominated by the Pike County Community Foundation, and their names will be submitted to ICI for final selection of the recipients. Scholarship recipients will be notified in December.

Lilly Endowment created LECSP for the 1997-98 school year and has supported the program every year since with tuition grants totaling more than $486 million. More than 5,000 Indiana students have received Lilly Endowment Community Scholarships since the program’s inception.

The primary purposes of the LECSP are: 1) to help raise the level of educational attainment in Indiana; 2) to increase awareness of the beneficial roles Indiana community foundations can play in their communities; and 3) to encourage and support the efforts of current and past Lilly Endowment Community Scholars to engage with each other and with Indiana business, governmental, educational, nonprofit and civic leaders to improve the quality of life in Indiana generally and in local communities throughout the state.

The Pike County Community Foundation is now accepting online applications for its Community Good Grants Program. The deadline to submit applications is Tuesday, August 15, 2023.

The Foundation awards Community Good grants to charitable partners located in or directly serving Pike County. Funding opportunities are available to support a broad range of local needs. Grants are normally given as one-time support of a project but may be considered for additional support, or for expansions or outgrowths of an initial project. All organizations submitting grant proposals will be notified of the outcome on or before October 31, 2023.

Pike County Community Foundation Awards Over $73,000 In Scholarships To 22 Area Students

The Pike County Community Foundation announces the distribution of community scholarships totaling $73,700 including renewable scholarships. This year, funds established by generous donors, provided scholarships to 22 area students. The Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship recipient and Community Scholarship recipients were recognized at the Pike County Community Foundation Spring Gala on Saturday, April 29 ^, 2023.

In addition to announcing the recipients, the Volunteer Director, Cindy Gaskins states, “The Pike County Community Foundation is thankful to our generous fund founders and donors who make these scholarship awards possible. Their investment in the education of our youth has impacted each of these students. The process of choosing who will be awarded each of these scholarships is undertaken with dedication and discipline by a committee made up of members of the Pike County Community. We are grateful for their hard work and dedication in doing this. The process is never easy because our Pike County students are exceptional.”

Darwin and Grace Youngs Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by Darwin Youngs for graduating seniors of Pike Central High School. This year’s recipient, Kennedy Willis, was awarded $1,000.

Petersburg High School Class of 1959 Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by the Petersburg High School Class of 1959. This year’s $1,000 award recipient is Isaac Fair.

Pike Central High School Scholarship is an annual, renewable scholarship created by Jim and Cindy Gaskins for Pike Central High School students. This year’s $2,000 award recipient is Jaylynn Capehart.

Vinson Family Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by John and Mary Ellen Vinson for graduating seniors of Pike Central High School. This year’s $1,500 award recipient is Hannah Cassada.

Reagan Craig of Pike Central High School is the 2023 Pike County Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship recipient. She will receive a full tuition scholarship to the Indiana College of her choice and a $900 yearly stipend for required books and equipment from the Lilly Endowment Scholarship. The Community Foundation handles the applications, and a volunteer selection committee of community leaders completes the review process for this award, submitting final nominations to Independent Colleges of Indiana.

The Pike County Community Foundation is pleased to announce the recipient of the 2023 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship for Pike County – Reagan Elisabeth Craig from Pike Central High School. Lilly Endowment Community Scholars are known for their community involvement, academic achievement, character, and leadership.

“Reagan is a stellar student and extremely active in the community,” said Cindy Gaskins, Volunteer Director for the Pike County Community Foundation.

Reagan is the daughter of Jon and Cassi Craig of Petersburg. Following graduation, she plans to major in Forensic Psychology with a Pre-Law Emphasis. Reagan is a member of the National Honor Society, Student Government, Key Club, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes to name a few. She serves on the board of Pike County United Way, is an active member of the First Baptist Church, and was involved in the FBI Youth Leadership Academy. Reagan also serves on the Petersburg Fire Department.

Each Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship provides for full tuition, required fees and a special allocation of up to $900 per year for required books and required equipment for four years. The scholarship is for undergraduate students studying on a full-time basis leading to a baccalaureate degree at any eligible Indiana public or private nonprofit college or university. Lilly Endowment Community Scholars may also participate in the Lilly Scholars Network (LSN), which connects both current scholars and alumni with resources and opportunities to be active leaders on their campuses and in their communities. Both the scholarship program and LSN are supported by grants from Lilly Endowment to Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI) and Indiana Humanities.

“The students who apply for the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship are all exceptional and every year the committee appreciates each of the applicants and their dedication to education and the community,” said Gaskins

Pike County Community Foundation Awards $128,808 to 35 Nonprofit Partners

The Pike County Community Foundation welcomed grant recipients and friends to a reception at the Main Street Presbyterian Church on November 3. The grants committee worked hard this season to determine the grant recipients. We are pleased to announce that grants of $128,808 were awarded to local 501(c)3 organizations and other nonprofit organizations.

Among the organizations receiving full or partial funding were:

· The Petersburg Elementary School Library to support hands-on materials to supplement reading in the library,

· Youth First to help support good mental health,

· Pike County Christian Assistance to provide food for those in need,

· TTR Haven Over the Hilltop helps to provide for the needs of familial foster care,

· Pike Central High School for the purchase of a drone for the new Radio and TV class,

· Pike County CASA to assist with the purchase of a cotton candy machine and to buy polo shirts for volunteers,

· Tri-Cap to support emergency funds for Pike County families,

· United Way to defray expenses for Day of Caring,

· Bread of Life as they help all local communities,

· Pike County Middle School to support the robotics program,

· Junior Achievement to support program expenses that will focus on work readiness, entrepreneurship, and/or financial literacy,

· Cross Country Boosters to assist with the cost of a new cross country finish line ,

· Winslow Elementary to support the It’s All About Engagement software that will empower teachers to utilize collaborative learning structures to foster 21st-century skills, increase engagement, and build community,

· Pike County School Corporation to purchase lab equipment in order to implement a hands-on introductory physics course,

· Kiwanis Club to support their Christmas dinner and gifts,

· Senior and Family Services for new kitchen equipment,

· Pike Central’s Mason’s General Store to purchase clothing and basic necessities for students to acquire at the Mason's General Store,

· Winslow Elementary to support the STEAM program,

· Pike County Football Boosters to purchase flex helmets and girdles for the safety of the players,

Funds were provided through the Community Good unrestricted funds established by many local residents and businesses for the good of Pike County. Those include: Wayne & Charlotte Malotte Fund, Emery & Edna Boger Fund, Hoosier Energy/Frank Ratts Memorial Fund, Montes/Fenol Family Fund, Rauch Family Fund, German American Bancorp Fund, Sisson Steel Fund, Angela Warner Fund, Beth & Bryan Luff Fund, Dyer/Wallace Fund, Lewis Family Fund, Wallace and Julia Schnarr Family Fund, Sorgius Family Fund, Wendell & Irene Craig Fund, Willis/Parker/Evans/Fowler Fund, William & Juanita Bell Fund, Stone/Tooley Family Fund, Paul & Karen Cooper Fund, Friends of Pike County Fund and the Pike County Grassroots Unrestricted Fund. Funding was also provided through the David DeTar Corn Trust a fund managed by the German American Bancorp on behalf of the late David DeTar Corn.

Pike County Community Foundation Now Accepting Applications For Community Good Grants

The Pike County Community Foundation is now accepting online applications for their Community Good Grants Program. The deadline to submit applications is Wednesday, September 14, 2022.

Pike County Community Foundation Announces 2022 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Recipient

The Pike County Community Foundation is pleased to announce that Everett Attaway is the 2022 recipient of the Pike County Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship. Lilly Endowment Community Scholars are known for their community involvement, academic achievement, character and leadership.

“The nominating committee was tasked with making a very difficult choice since this year’s applicants were extremely qualified individuals,” said Cindy Gaskins, Volunteer Director of the Pike County Community Foundation.

Everett Attaway is the son of Roy and Tracy Attaway, of Winslow, Indiana. He is a senior at Pike Central High School and plans to attend Rose Hulman or Purdue University to study civil engineering. In addition to excelling academically, Everett has been involved in a variety of school activities including the German Club, National Honor Society, and Academic Bowl. His community involvement includes working with the Winslow Volunteer Fire Department and the Lion’s Club.

In nominating Pike County’s Lilly Endowment Community Scholar, consideration was given to a number of criteria including but not limited to grades, difficulty of curriculum, school involvement, honors and awards, community activity and financial need by the nominating committee. After the field of applicants was narrowed down, nominees were submitted to the statewide administrator of the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program, ICI, for the selection of scholarship recipients.

Scholarship award alternates were also announced. Sophie Carnahan and Kya Sullivan were named as alternates.

The Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program (LECSP) is administered locally by the Community Foundation, with the support of local high schools, and the administrative oversight by the Independent Colleges of Indiana, Inc. (ICI). Lilly Endowment created the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program for the 1998-1999 school year and has supported the program every year since with tuition grants totaling in excess of $439 million. More than 5,000 Indiana students have received the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship since the program’s inception.

The 2022 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship application is now available in Pike County through the Pike County Community Foundation. The Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program (LECSP) will provide 143 scholarships statewide and 1 scholarship in Pike County. LECSP scholarships may be used for otherwise unreimbursed full tuition, required fees, and a special allocation of up to $900 per year. The special allocation may cover the costs for required books and required equipment for four years of undergraduate study on a full-time basis leading to a baccalaureate degree at any eligible Indiana public or private nonprofit college or university.

The program, administered statewide by Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI) and locally in Pike County through the Pike County Community Foundation, is open to all Indiana residents who:

graduate from an accredited Indiana high school by 2022 and receive their diploma no later than June 30, 2022;
intend to pursue a full-time baccalaureate course of study at an eligible college or university in Indiana; and
meet the criteria specific to their local community foundation.

Applications will be evaluated on, but not limited to, the following criteria: class rank, financial need, and community activities, one student and two alternates will be nominated by the Pike County Community Foundation, and their names will be submitted to ICI for final selection of the recipients. Scholarship recipients will be notified in December.

Lilly Endowment created LECSP for the 1997-1998 school year and has supported the program every year since with tuition grants totaling more than $424 million. Nearly 5,000 Indiana students have received Lilly Endowment Community Scholarships since the program’s inception.

(Petersburg, Indiana) The Pike County Community Foundation has announced that Lauren Young is the 2021 recipient of the Pike County Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship. This scholarship provides the recipient with otherwise unreimbursed full-tuition, required fees, and a special allocation of up to $900 per year for required books and required equipment for four years of undergraduate study on a full-time basis leading to a baccalaureate degree at any Indiana public or private nonprofit college or university, accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

Lauren is the daughter of Christian and Amanda Young of Winslow. She is a senior at Pike Central High School and plans to attend Ball State University to study Biology/Pre-medicine, with a goal of becoming a Dermatologist. In addition to exceling academically, Lauren has been involved in National Honor Society, Key Club, student government, and the Riley Dance Marathon. She is also a member of the soccer team, track and field team, and Swing Choir. She worked as a Genealogy Intern at the Pike County Public Library.

Scholarship award alternates were also announced as first alternate Libby Stone and second alternate Hunter Russell.

The Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program is administered locally by the Community Foundation, with the support of local high schools, and the administrative oversight by the Independent Colleges of Indiana, Inc. (ICI). Since the program was first introduced in 1998, Lilly Endowment Inc. has provided over $424M in grant support for the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program.

The primary purposes of the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program are 1) to help raise the level of educational attainment in Indiana; 2) to increase awareness of the beneficial roles Indiana community foundations can play in their communities; and 3) to encourage and support the efforts of current and past Lilly Endowment Community Scholars to engage with each other and with Indiana business, governmental, educational, nonprofit and civic leaders to improve the quality of life in Indiana generally and in local communities throughout the state.
